Divya Ravi, assistant professor in the TCS group has been awarded a personal VENI grant from NWO, congratulations!!

We are very happy to announce that Florian Speelman has switched groups within IvI to become a member of the TCS group. His research interests include quantum communication, quantum cryptography and complexity theory.

Divya Ravi has switched groups within IvI to become a member of the TCS group. Her research interests in Secure Multi-Party Computation fit well our current expertise. For the coming 5 years, Divya will be working on the new NWO Gravitation project “Challenges in Cyber Security (CiCS)”.

John van de Wetering, assistant professor in the TCS group has been awarded a personal VENI grant from NWO, congratulations!!

On Wednesday, 26 June 2024, the IvI TCS group organized a TCS alumni lunch from 12.00 to 14.00 in L3.36 at Lab42. The goal of the meeting to get to know about current and past research of the IvI TCS group. From 12.00 - 12.30 the current TCS members gave a quick personal introduction and overview of their ongoing research, education and valorisation activities. After that, the retired guests of the TCS group (Inge Bethke, Jan Bergstra, Alban Ponse, Kees Middelburg, Piet Rodenburg) presented their ongoing research efforts.

To celebrate (Dutch) summer, Chris invited the TCS group members for a BBQ to his house on IJburg. Sarah volunteered as chef to prepare loads of tasty Korean BBQ.

The TCS Group of the Informatics Institute has the pleasure to host the following public lecture on Monday, June 10 from 4-5pm in the CWI Turingzaal. Following the lecture, we will host a reception in the Newtonzaal, where refreshments will be provided.

Cyber security is often portrayed as an educational problem or a resource problem, shifting blame on users, system administrators, or the budget holders limiting the system administrators’ abilities. However, there are many hard problems that remain unsolved and that require a coordinated scientific investigation. The “Challenges in Cyber Security” project brings together top researchers from the hard sciences areas of cyber security to tackle these hard open problems. It is led by Eindhoven University of Technology and has been rewarded 21.5 million for a 10-year program. UvA-scientists Christian Schaffner, Zoltan Mann, Francesco Regazzoni, Kostas Papagiannopoulos and Karst Koymans from the Informatics Institute are also involved in the project.

Having grown significantly in the number of group members of the last months, Ailsa organised a TCS group outing to the Jaap Eden Baan, where we had great fun ice skating! We finished off with a nice group dinner in the neighborhood.

All the TCS group members joined up for our first group outing, which doubled as good-bye event for Feline, who has been assisting the TCS groups over the last few months. We wish her the best of luck for her upcoming PhD with Davide Grossi in Groningen!

Do you have a passion for mathematics and a desire to solve problems arising in the theoretical study of computation? Are you excited by the prospect of collaborating with other mathematically-inclined researchers to attack these questions? We are seeking a PhD student to carry out cutting-edge research in theoretical computer science (TCS).

We are happy to announce the hiring of three new faculty members in Theoretical Computer Science (TCS) at the University of Amsterdam, thereby further growing the active community of TCS researchers in Amsterdam.

Rebecca Reiffenhäuser and Balder ten Cate are joining the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC), and Nicolas Resch is joining the Theory of Computer Science group at the Informatics Institute, all at the Faculty of Science (FNWI) of the UvA.

The arrival of quantum computers will have major societal consequences, especially in the field of cybersecurity. A new consortium led by Sebastian De Haro of the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation and the Institute of Physics of the University of Amsterdam has received a grant of over 900,000 euros from NWO’s Nationale Wetenschapsagenda (National Science Agenda, NWA) to study the impact of this transition and to help manage it.
